Body of miner found in Puruni River


Police in Regional Division #7 have launched an investigation following the discovery of a body in the Puruni River early Monday morning, August 18, 2025.
The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Christopher Stephens, a miner from Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
According to police reports, ranks responded to information received and visited the location near the Puruni landing. At approximately 06:20 hrs, Stephens’ body was found face down in the water, about two minutes from the landing site.
At the time of discovery, the victim was wearing a black short-sleeve jersey, orange boxers, and short blue pants. A suspected chop wound was observed on his forehead.
Stephens was positively identified by his sister, 25-year-old Catianna Stephens, also of Tuschen.
Police have not yet released details about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
