As Guyana gears up for the September 1, 2025 general and regional elections, Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken has offered assurances that any attempt to disrupt the democratic process will be “dealt with swiftly and decisively.”

“Let it be clearly understood. Any attempt to create disorder, intimidate others or break the law will be dealt with swiftly and decisively,” Hicken said on Tuesday night.

In a pre-broadcast video statement released by the Guyana Police Force, Hicken said the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is fully prepared to safeguard law and order before, during, and after elections.

In fact, he said the Force is “fully prepared” for the elections.

“This is an important moment for our country. A time for all of us to show the world that Guyana is a peaceful, respectful and a united nation.

“The Guyana Police Force is responsible for internal security and is fully prepared for the elections,” Hicken said in the statement.

He emphasised that officers will be deployed across all ten administrative regions and the 12 policing districts—not to interfere with voting, but to protect citizens’ constitutional rights.

“The role of the GPF is to maintain order and to ensure that every citizen can exercise their right without fear or disruption,” Hicken said while noting that the Force is trained, prepared to ensure a smooth process.

While urging citizens to carry themselves with pride, Hicken made it clear that the force will show zero tolerance for misconduct. “Any attempt to create disorder, intimidate others or break the law will be dealt with swiftly and decisively,” he declared.

Calling the elections an important moment for national unity, Hicken appealed to every citizen to demonstrate that the country is “peaceful, respectful and united.”

“Together, let’s safeguard the peace before, during, and after elections,” he urged.
