Attorney General Anil Nandlall has written to international observers and the Guyana Police Force, raising concerns about recent remarks from opposition figures suggesting they may not accept the outcome of the upcoming elections.

Nandlall said Tuesday night that both Aubrey Norton, Leader of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), and U.S sanctioned Azruddin Mohamed, who recently launched his WIN party, have publicly indicated they would only recognise results favourable to them.

“Mr Norton has said more than once that if APNU does not win, he will not accept the results. Mr Mohamed has made similar declarations,” the Attorney General stated. “That is dangerous. Those are not just slip-of-the-tongue remarks, they are threats to our democracy.”

He explained that his concerns have been formally conveyed to international observers, as well as to the Police Commissioner. “I have reported these statements and requested that swift action be taken where necessary. The rule of law must prevail.”

Nandlall further argued that the opposition has a “long history of refusing to accept results” and reminded of the unrest that followed previous elections. “We saw what happened in 2020. We saw what happened in 1997 and 2001. Violence and disruption followed each time results were rejected.”

The Attorney General also dismissed the opposition’s claims of election rigging, insisting that “the PPP/C has always abided by the results, even when we were defeated”.

“We cannot have people running around telling supporters that they will not accept elections if they lose. That is a recipe for instability,” Nandlall warned.
