Prime Minister Mark Phillips Tuesday made a direct pitch to Afro-Guyanese voters, urging them to rally behind the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) at the upcoming elections, declaring that the government has delivered development for all Guyanese regardless of race.

Addressing a packed roadside meeting at Flambouyant Square, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Phillips told supporters: “My Afro-Guyanese brothers and sisters, go to the polling place and put your X next to the cup. Now is the time to show the world that you are unshackled, emancipated.”

He stressed that his appeal was not about dividing Guyana along racial lines but about reminding voters of the benefits they have already received.

“I don’t mean to single out any race. But I know the message they [the opposition] try to send to my African brothers. I’m saying, this is the time for you to make a decision for your continued development.”

Phillips pointed to new roads, hospitals, schools and housing schemes as tangible proof of promises delivered over the last five years.

“We made commitments and we delivered. Every region has seen new schools and hospitals, every community has felt the benefits of our work.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s COVID-19 response, distribution of 50,000 house lots, salary increases for public servants, and the doubling of pensions and social support. “When we make policies, they are for all Guyanese. African, Indian, Amerindian, Chinese—everybody has benefited,” he said.

Framing the vote as the most powerful weapon in a democracy, Phillips urged citizens not to be swayed by race-based appeals from political commentators.

“We must vote on issues, not race. That is what will develop Guyana,” he said.
