Pouring of foundation Tuesday for first energy turbine of landmark Gas-to-Energy project

The foundation for the first energy turbine will be poured Tuesday, President Irfaan Ali announced Monday, signaling a major milestone for Guyana’s flagship Gas-to-Energy (GTE).

At a meeting with Winston Brassington, head of the GTE Task Force, the President was informed that “the pouring of the first gas turbine foundation will take place on Tuesday night, September 9, and that over 300 persons are currently employed on the project.”

Brassington, who reported that work on Phase I — which includes a 300-megawatt combined cycle power plant and natural gas liquids (NGL) facilities being built by Lindsayca Guyana Inc, said the project is advancing steadily.

Another 100 people are expected to join the project within a month as concrete pouring for the remaining turbine foundations gets underway.

Phase II of the project, which envisions another 300-megawatt plant and NGL facility, has also attracted strong interest. Brassington told the President that seven submissions have been received and that talks are ongoing to finalise a shortlist of pre-qualified firms before moving directly to engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) and financing arrangements.

The GTE project is central to Guyana’s strategy of cutting energy costs by half and boosting industrial development as the country channels offshore gas resources into domestic power generation.
