Newly appointed Home Affairs Minister, Oneidge Walrond, has pledged to crack down on illegal firearms and intensify efforts to combat domestic violence, signalling a firm approach to public safety under her leadership.

“What we are concerned about and what we are addressing is the issue of domestic crime, which remains a serious challenge. One person being killed or seriously injured in a domestic incident is one too many,” Walrond told reporters on Wednesday.

Her comments align with President Dr Irfaan Ali’s call during his recent inauguration speech for the complete elimination of domestic violence in Guyana.

Walrond, a former magistrate who previously served as Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, made the remarks while touring the reconstruction site of the Brickdam Police Station. She noted that overall crime has declined by 26 per cent but stressed that sustained action is needed, particularly against illegal guns.

“In terms of illicit firearms on our streets, that work continues. The police force and other agencies have been working to get illicit firearms off the streets. I’ve also engaged with agencies and community leaders to understand the true scale of the problem,” she said.

Drawing on her judicial background, Walrond emphasised that stricter law enforcement and successful prosecutions will be central to her tenure. She also revealed plans to introduce digital systems to ensure greater accountability and transparency in firearm licensing, eliminating bias in the approval process.

“It should be based on clear criteria, and that is what we will set under my administration. I’ve spoken with the secretary of the Firearm Board and will soon engage the chairman once the Board is renewed. Together, we will establish guidelines that remove human bias,” the minister explained.

Looking ahead, Walrond said citizen safety will remain at the heart of her agenda over the next five years. This includes further investment in the “Safe City” initiative pioneered by her predecessor, Robeson Benn, as well as stronger enforcement of traffic laws.
