Dr Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyana-born educator who rose to become superintendent of Iowa’s largest public school district, has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over claims he has been living and working in the country illegally.

Roberts, 48, was born to Guyanese parents and spent his early years in Brooklyn, New York, before embarking on a distinguished career in education. A former Olympian who represented Guyana in track and field at the 2000 Sydney Games, he went on to earn advanced degrees from Coppin State University, St John’s University, Georgetown University, and Trident University, with further studies at Harvard.

Despite his achievements, ICE alleges that Roberts has remained in the United States without legal status since entering on a student visa in 1999. In May 2024, an immigration judge issued a final order of removal against him, which the agency says was never carried out.

Roberts was arrested Friday morning after reportedly fleeing an initial encounter with ICE agents the day before. He was later found in possession of a loaded handgun, US$3,000 in cash, and a hunting knife, officials said. Federal law bars undocumented individuals from possessing firearms, and the matter is now under investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“This suspect was arrested in possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle provided by Des Moines Public Schools after fleeing federal law enforcement,” said Sam Olson, director of ICE’s St Paul Field Office.

Roberts has served as superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools since July 2023, following a national search. The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners granted him a superintendent’s licence, and district officials said he passed third-party background checks and submitted required employment documentation. He had also disclosed a prior firearm charge during the hiring process.

The school board said it was unaware of the 2024 removal order and expressed shock at his detention. Board Chair Jackie Norris urged the community to practise “radical empathy,” while Interim Superintendent Matt Smith described Roberts as “an integral part of our school community.”

Roberts’ biography highlights not only his academic and professional accomplishments but also his Guyanese heritage and athletic career. Beyond Sydney 2000, he represented Guyana at the World Championships in Maebashi, Japan, and Seville, Spain.

For many in the Guyanese diaspora, his rise to the helm of a major U.S. school district had been a source of pride. Now, his sudden detention has left both the Iowa education community and Guyanese abroad grappling with the dramatic turn of events.

It is not immediately clear whether Roberts has retained legal counsel.
