President Ali advances national waste management and beautification drive with new landfill sites, green spaces planned

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali is pushing forward with Guyana’s National Solid Waste Management and Beautification Initiative, signalling a renewed commitment to cleaner, greener communities across the country.

On Monday, the President met with Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand and a team of technical officers to refine plans for new and expanded landfill sites nationwide. The initiative, he said, will not only modernise waste disposal but also create opportunities for sustainable community development.

A collaborative approach is being taken, with the Ministries of Housing and Tourism joining the effort to identify suitable spaces for green areas and beautification projects alongside local government. Work is expected to begin before the end of the year, according to a statement issued on President Ali’s official social media page.

The high-level discussions also brought together Housing Minister Collin Croal, Minister within the Housing Ministry Vanessa Benn, Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Susan Rodrigues, Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Minister Zulfikar Ally, and Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs.

President Ali emphasised that the initiative will integrate both infrastructure and aesthetics—upgrading landfill capacity while enhancing public spaces to improve quality of life and ensure sustainable growth.
