Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill has stated that the Diamond–Grove road expansion project has significantly improved the traffic flow along the East Bank Corridor.

The East Bank Demerara corridor is a vital route for commercial and daily commuting and it continues to see major improvements. During a traffic update on Monday, Minister Edghill noted that the once-notorious traffic bottleneck at Grove is now resolved.

“I’m sure the Guyanese people are happy that the road at the Grove to Diamond area, we’ve already moved it to asphaltic concrete and the traffic is moving in four lanes – two lanes north and two lanes south – so that bottleneck at Grove has been resolved,” Minister Edghill said.

Commuters along the East Bank Demerara are now experiencing smoother traffic flow, a major milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to ease congestion along one of the country’s busiest corridors.

He added that the ministry is working closely with contractors to ensure smoother movement along other sections of the corridor.

“We are working with the contractors at the East Coast to see swifter and smoother movement, and the police will be there this week,” the minister said.

The East Bank Demerara roadway accommodates over 30,000 vehicles daily, making its maintenance and expansion a top government priority to support safe and efficient travel. The eastern carriageway at Grove was opened to motorists as utility relocation works got underway in August and now, the minister has disclosed that four-lanes are being used.

Earlier this year, officials introduced new traffic arrangements to facilitate ongoing works, including rerouting private cars onto specially built bypasses, while heavy-duty vehicles and public transportation continued along the main road.

Minister Edghill explained that these bypasses were developed prior to the start of construction to minimise disruptions.

The project, managed by the Special Projects Unit (SPU), involves a full reconstruction of the corridor, including excavation, sub-base replacement, and the use of modern materials and asphaltic concrete to ensure structural durability. The upgraded East Bank network will significantly improve mobility for residents, businesses, and visitors.
