The Guyana Police Force has signalled their strong intent to claim the title at the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) National Open and Intermediate Championships, which runs from 25–27 October.

The Police squad, coached by decorated former national and professional boxer Dexter Marques, warned they will be “taking no prisoners” when the event begins at the National Gymnasium.

Marques, who boasts an impressive professional record of 19 wins and four losses, declared his team is “coming for the title” this year.

“We’ve been putting in the rounds, and the guys are hungry,” Marques said.

“This year, we’re not aiming for second, we’re coming for the title.”

The Force plans to field at least 15 boxers across various weight divisions, and Marques admits that the quality of training has made selecting the final line-up difficult.

“The guys have been showing up to training with real commitment, and I admire the energy they bring in the gym,” he added.

This year’s prestigious tournament is being staged in honour of the late National Coach Terrence Poole, MS, who dedicated his life to developing the sport in Guyana.

The event is expected to attract top fighters from clubs nationwide.

Despite the confidence within the Police camp, Marques is preparing his boxers for a tough challenge from traditional rivals, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and emerging talent from the Berbice region.
