Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, has announced that he will move to enforce a $37 million judgment granted by the High Court of Guyana against social media commentator Melissa “Melly Mell” Atwell in the United States.

Speaking during his Issues in the News programme on Tuesday night, Nandlall declared, “She will pay,” as he outlined plans to have the local judgment registered and executed overseas.

The case stems from a series of “false, libellous and scandalous” posts made by Atwell in November 2024, in which she accused the Attorney General of multiple crimes and misconduct.

“I don’t know this individual and she doesn’t know me,” Nandlall said, adding that despite his challenge for her to produce any evidence of the allegations, “obviously, she was unable to do any of those things.”

He reminded that the High Court recently ruled in his favour, awarding $37 million in damages and $500,000 in costs.

According to Nandlall, Atwell has boasted that the judgment cannot affect her because she resides in the U.S. “She was even saying at the time that she cannot be sued in Guyana because she’s not in Guyana,” he noted.

But the Attorney General warned that she is “ignorant of the law.”

“Just like how she will now learn that you don’t have to be in Guyana to be sued, she will also soon learn that these judgments are not as impotent as she thinks they are,” Nandlall stated.

He said the ruling will be sent to his “team of lawyers in the United States of America” with firm instructions to have it registered and enforced there.

“This judgment will be enforced against any money or property she has… even if we have to get one dollar per day, they’re going to get it,” he asserted.

Nandlall explained that his action is not just personal but meant to show that “the law must never be allowed to appear incapable or impotent to address illegality.”

He said the case should serve as a lesson to those who believe they can defame others from abroad without consequence.

“This must be a learning experience for all of us who believe that we can be in a foreign country and libel people as we wish… and we are somehow insulated from the laws of this land,” the Attorney General cautioned.
