Ranks of the Guyana Police Force on Wednesday carried out a major joint eradication exercise at Kuyarakuru Creek and Sabina Point, Upper Berbice River, resulting in the destruction of cannabis estimated to be worth over $70  million.

Police Headquarters said the operation was conducted between 04:00 hrs and 06:30 hrs by officers from the Narcotics Branch and Regional Division Six.

During the exercise, Police said ranks discovered four separate cannabis farms covering approximately sixteen acres.

The farms contained an estimated 95,000 cannabis plants ranging from two to seven feet in height.

Authorities also uncovered a makeshift camp measuring 30 by 20 feet, which held around 90 pounds of dried cannabis.

All cannabis plants, dried cannabis, and the makeshift camp were destroyed by fire, Police said.

The total street value of the seized narcotics is estimated at $70.9 million with the cannabis plants valued at $32.1 million and the dried cannabis at $38.7  million.

Investigations into the origin and operators of the cannabis farms are continuing.
