Guyana’s Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, is on a mission to help more Guyanese experience their country and hopes to do so by making local tourism more affordable and accessible.

Rodrigues told reporters that Guyana’s tourism sector is growing, but to help expand and sustain it, Guyanese themselves must be able to experience their country.

“We are tailoring our tourism product for our visitors, but we wanna ensure that it remains affordable for Guyanese right at home.

“A lot of people haven’t been able to witness what Guyana has to offer. I wanna make ambassadors out of them, and in order for me to do that, they have to experience what visitors who come to Guyana experience,” Rodrigues said at the sidelines of an event on Wednesday.

Already, she has successfully engaged local hotels on capping their prices for Guyanese (those living here and those from the diaspora) at 200 USD nightly. Several local hotels, including the Aiden by Best Western and the Royal International Hotel, have voluntarily embraced this venture.

Rodrigues said many more hotels will come on board and hinted at cheaper experiences in Guyana for locals.

Once these ventures are rolled out, she explained, Guyanese will be able to enjoy their country and local tourism stakeholders will have a steady flow of business from foreigners and visitors.
