Fire Service has the tools, now needs the leadership and training – Walrond

Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond says while the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has received billions in investment and now boasts some of the most advanced equipment in the region, the next critical step is strengthening leadership and procurement capacity within the organisation.

“We are not wanting for tools. It’s the procurement capacity and leadership that need to be built, that’s now a priority for the Fire Service,” Walrond told the News Room during an exclusive interview recently.

According to Walrond, the government has already delivered the resources needed to modernise the service, including cutting-edge firefighting tools, new fire stations, and specialised equipment.

But she emphasised that effective management and leadership training are now the priority.

She explained that the Fire Service has benefited from significant investments such as the acquisition of two fire lifts— the only ones in the region — which allow firefighters to tackle blazes in taller buildings, as well as a modern marine firefighting boat.

These, she said, reflect the government’s commitment to equipping the service for a rapidly developing Guyana.

However, Walrond noted that having the tools is not enough.

“There is still work to be done in building out leadership for this modern Guyana — a fire service that is fit for a country that’s growing fast,” she said.

To achieve this, Walrond said the ministry is prioritising training and exposure of firefighters to international best practices, focusing on effective monitoring, evaluation, and leadership skills.

The aim, Walrond said, is to create a fire service capable of managing its resources efficiently while maintaining the highest professional standards.

“Our firefighters must not only be well-equipped but also well-led,” Walrond said.
