In an effort to further enhance his obvious skills, reigning National Junior cycling champion Alexander Leung will participate in a Track and Road cycling camp organised by the International Cycling Union (UCI)/World Cycling Centre (WCC) Continental Development Satellite in Couva, Trinidad.

The talented 17-year-old, attached to Continental Cycling Club, departed Guyana on Monday for the camp, which runs from October 27 to November 8.

The training is part of a programme in the lead-up to the 2027 Pan American Games and is open to athletes in the Under-19 and Under-23 age groups.

Leung, a former national Juveniles champion who recently competed in the Caribbean Junior Championship in Barbados, said he is looking forward to the opportunity to develop his capabilities on the saddle.

“This is a very good camp for me and I’m looking to make the most of it,” Leung, who just last Sunday finished third among the Juniors in the ‘Fireworks 4’ race meet, told News Room Sport.

The promising rider is grateful to the many persons and entities that have supported his journey to the camp, among them the Guyana Cycling Federation, Continental Cycling Club and Macedo Transportation Services.

In July 2024, Leung was also part of a three-member Guyana contingent that successfully completed a road cycling training camp at the UCI Continental Development Satellite in Couva.

About the UCI Continental Development Satellite

The UCI/WCC Continental Development Satellite in Couva is a regional centre for cycling development, launched in December 2022.

It focuses on track, road and mountain biking, and serves as a hub for training, education and athletic development for the Western Hemisphere and Caribbean regions, operating from the National Cycling Centre.

The center also hosts programmes like the first UCI Para-cycling coaching course for the region.

According to the UCI, Regional and Continental development satellites are a development extension of the World Cycling Centre, offering a central access point for education and athletic cycling development services, as well as programmes for National Cycling Federations and their members, on a given continent.

Regional and Continental development satellites operate with the same mission as that of the UCI/WCC (Aigle, Switzerland) which is to be a key driver of development and sporting excellence in service to National Cycling Federations and their members.

As a result, the presence of Regional and Continental development satellites create enhanced opportunities for emerging nations to become more autonomous in the driving of their own projects and missions, all the while increasing development progression with the cohort of athletes that can lead to qualification and performance at either Olympic and Paralympic Games.
