Police preparing to seek legal advice in gas station attack probe

Police investigators probing the deadly attack at the Mobil Gas Station on Regent and King Streets, Georgetown, are now preparing to seek legal advice as the investigation continues.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told the News Room on Monday that the case file is being prepared to be sent for legal advice, which will determine the next course of action in the investigation.

Blanhum also confirmed that images of the explosive device used in the attack were retrieved from Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo’s mobile phone. Peodomo reportedly confessed to the crime.

Nine suspects remain in custody in connection with the bombing, which claimed the life of six-year-old Soraya Bourne.

Police sought and were granted an extension from the High Court to further detain the suspects.

Those in custody include Daniel, another Venezuelan man and woman, and a Guyanese hire car driver.

Investigations revealed that Peodomo entered Guyana illegally from Venezuela around 08:00 hrs on October 26, the same day of the explosion. He and three accomplices reportedly conducted surveillance of the gas station between 11:00 hrs and noon, before launching the attack later that night.

Clothing believed to have been worn by Daniel were recovered shortly before his arrest at a location in Vergenoegen, Region Three.

President Dr Irfaan Ali, over the weekend, condemned the incident as a “vile assault on Guyana,” assuring that justice will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law.

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond has reiterated that the government intends to pursue the death penalty once charges are filed.
