Man arrested after viral video shows donkey forced to run behind moving car

A 64-year-old man from Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, has been arrested by Police for cruelty to an animal after a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing a donkey being forced to walk behind a moving vehicle.
The incident, which sparked widespread outrage online, reportedly occurred along the La Grange Public Road. The footage showed a motor car bearing registration number PJJ 8712 being driven while a light brown and cream unbranded male donkey—commonly referred to as a “jack”—was tethered to the vehicle and made to keep pace as it moved.
Following swift investigation, law enforcement officers arrested the suspect around 17:00 hrs on Monday, November 4, 2025, for cruelty to an animal, contrary to Section 178(1) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.
Police have since taken custody of the donkey, which is being kept at the La Grange Police Station for safekeeping as the investigation continues.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) strongly condemned the act, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on animal cruelty and reaffirming its commitment to upholding the laws that protect animals from abuse and neglect.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
