Kristoff De Nobrega freed as Judge upholds no-case submission in Quindon Bacchus’ murder case

Kristoff De Nobrega is now a free man after Justice Gino Persaud on Thursday upheld a no-case submission at the High Court in Georgetown, bringing an end to the murder proceedings against him.

After the case, De Nobrega’s attorney, George Thomas told reporters that there were insufficient evidence to support the charge.

“At the close of the case for the prosecution we would have made a no-case submission which the judge would have ruled on today and we were successful. Mr DeNobrega is a free man,” Thomas said to reporters.

DeNobrega, a Lance Corporal had been accused of murdering 23-year-old Quindon Bacchus, who was fatally shot on June 10, 2022, at Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

He consistently maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

The case had initially proceeded to the High Court after Magistrate Fabayo Azore, sitting at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, found that a prima facie case had been made out during the preliminary inquiry. De Nobrega was committed to stand trial at the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes and had remained on remand pending the hearing.

Two other officers – Lance Corporal Thurston Simon and Cadet Officer Dameion McClennon were separately charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice by allegedly providing false information to investigators during the probe. Their matters remain ongoing.
