Former Member of Parliament for the Alliance for Change (AFC) and Linden resident, Devin Sears, on Friday secured $400,000 bail in the High Court after being remanded on a drug-trafficking charge earlier this month.

Bail was granted by Justice Navindra Singh, following an application made by attorneys Nigel Hughes and Bernard Da Silva, who appeared on Sears’ behalf at the High Court. The matter is now set to return to the Linden Magistrate’s Court on November 11  2025 for report and disclosure.

Sears was remanded after appearing before Magistrate Rushell Liverpool at Linden, where he pleaded not guilty to trafficking more than 310.71 kilogrammes (685 pounds) of cannabis. His co-accused, Albert Sandy, pleaded guilty and accepted full responsibility for the narcotics, receiving a four-year prison sentence.

The two men were arrested after police intercepted a minibus near the Old Bamia Police Checkpoint. The vehicle, driven by Sears and registered to the Region 10 Tourism Committee Inc., was found with the massive quantity of cannabis.

According to investigators, Sandy admitted ownership of the drugs, telling police he had paid Sears to transport him to Parika. Police also reported that Sears appeared nervous and “sweating profusely” during the stop. When questioned about what he was transporting, he allegedly responded, “I am transporting tourism plants.”

With bail now secured, Sears is expected to return to court in Linden next week as the matter proceeds.
