The talented Kyle Couchman has become the first Junior player in Guyana to cross the 2000 Elo rating mark, the Guyana Chess Federation has announced. Now 15, Couchman is the youngest Guyanese player ever to the historic milestone.

“The reigning National Junior Champion continues his impressive rise and is well on his way to becoming a titled player. According to the October FIDE Rating List, Couchman is now ranked number two in Guyana, just behind National Champion CM Taffin Khan, among active players,” the Guyana Chess Federation highlighted.

    About the Elo rating system

The Elo rating system measures the relative strength of a player in some games, such as chess, compared to other players.

Its creator, Arpad Elo, was a physics professor in the United States and a chess master who worked to improve the way the U.S. Chess Federation measured their players’ skill levels.

The Elo rating system was officially adopted by the U.S. Chess Federation in 1960 and by FIDE in 1970. Many chess organisations and websites also use this system to rate players.
