Woman fined, jailed for cocaine trafficking
Lisa Ramnarine, 27, has been sentenced to 32 months’ imprisonment and fined $810,000 several years after she was accused of smuggling cocaine inside a religious item via the DHL courier service.
According to a release from the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU), Ramnarine appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly on Monday. She was found guilty of the offence of possession of 540 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
As such, she was fined and sentenced.
In 2022, it was reported that CANU ranks arrested Ramnarine following the discovery of cocaine in a parcel at DHL, which contained a Hindu Havan Kund and other religious items.
Officers examined the items and discovered a hidden compartment within the Kund, which contained the cocaine. The sender’s information retrieved from the package led to the arrest of Ramnarine.
