Cricket and Basketball Federations praise revamped National Sports Awards
Guyana’s major sporting bodies have lauded the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCY&S) for setting a new benchmark for recognising athletic achievement, following the successful execution of the National Sports Awards Gala.
Both the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) praised the transition to a black-tie formal event, which they say has elevated the prestige and professional standard of the ceremony.
GCB President Bissoondyal Singh hailed the transformation, noting that the Ministry and the National Sports Commission (NSC) have “most certainly lifted the profile of the National Sports Awards.”
The Gala, which was the MCY&S’s first official black-tie event, was described by the GCB as “inspirational—a touching celebration filled with pride, gratitude, and the vibrant energy that reflects the very soul of Guyanese sport.”
The GCB further commended the ceremony’s elegance and prestige, stating that it beautifully showcased the respect and admiration athletes richly deserve.
GBF President Michael Singh, whose Federation captured the coveted Association of the Year award, noted that the enhanced organisation and presentation were the most impressive aspects of the occasion.
Crucially, Singh highlighted the introduction of monetary incentives for awardees as a significant step in motivating athletes.

He remarked: “The introduction of monetary incentives certainly adds to the prestige of the Sports Awards, and it gives our athletes and associations the moral booster needed to keep pushing the limits in sport.”
Both federations offered strong words of praise for the Ministry’s leadership, specifically Minister Charles Ramson Jr, and the NSC, under Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle.
The GCB expressed confidence that under the Minister’s “astute and visionary leadership,” and with the addition of Minister Steven Jacobs, the Ministry would be empowered to “reach greater heights and inspire even more success.”
The ceremony, which announced nominees across every sporting discipline, was lauded as a powerful reminder of the dedication, sacrifice, and passion that fuel sporting excellence in Guyana.
The GCB concluded by extending heartfelt commendation to the NSC for its “unwavering commitment and steadfast service” in strengthening the foundation for young athletes to thrive.
