President Irfaan Ali on Wednesday night issued a stern warning to road users with outstanding traffic tickets, announcing that the names of top offenders and the amounts owed will be published in the newspapers.

“In the next few days you will see the top offenders published in the newspaper with their outstanding amounts in terms of tickets and I use this forum to calmly appeal to those who have outstanding payments to do so within the next 48 hours or their license will be suspended,” President Ali said while addressing a UK High Commission reception.

The President said he had received the latest report on the use of the country’s roadways and the performance of the Safe Road Intelligence System.

According to the report, more than 42,000 traffic tickets have been issued so far, with 10,000 drivers already paying their fines.

The Head of State stressed that the systems being put in place are designed to produce real and measurable results.

As part of ongoing upgrades, police ranks and patrol vehicles will also be equipped with smart technology soon.

“Our police cars and police ranks will be equipped with smart meters and smart cars before the end of this year so that electronically everything will be recorded and stored, removing that human interface and allowing technology to help people to do better.”

The Safe Road Intelligence System, officially launched on April 7, 2025 was developed primarily to monitor speeding. However, it also detects a range of other offences, including tinted windows, coloured lights and failure to wear seat belts.
