$75,000 fine for persons who fail to comply with new tint rules

Motorists who fail to meet the new tint standards by the end of 2025 will face immediate testing and hefty penalties, as the government prepares to enforce stricter regulations on vehicle window tints.

“For persons who fail to comply, Police officers will have tint metres to test their tint on the spot, and if you are found not to be in compliance, then there will be a heavy fine of $75,000 being levied for not having your tint in compliance,” Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, recently disclosed.

She explained that the existing legislation will be amended to support the updated enforcement plan.
The amendment will outline how compliance checks will be executed, including the use and calibration of the tint metres, as well as the categories of individuals who will qualify for exemptions.

It will also detail how the enforcement process will unfold and the framework surrounding the fines.

According to Walrond, the amendment has already been drafted and is intended to bring clarity and ease to the public as the new tint regime takes effect.

The government has introduced sweeping reforms to Guyana’s vehicle-tint regulations, establishing a new national standard and giving motorists until 31 December 2025 to make their vehicles compliant.

During the announcement last Friday, Walrond said the overhaul was necessary after a surge in tint-waiver requests and growing reports of abuse within the previous system.

Under the updated rules, all motor vehicles are now permitted tint with no less than 35 percent light penetration, and drivers will no longer need a standard tint waiver.

Walrond said this universal allowance was introduced “in the interest of equity and to eliminate administrative delays.”

Despite removing the old system, the government has created three new categories of tint waivers tailored to access and security needs. Categories One and Two will apply strictly to diplomats, government officials, high-profile security personnel, and any other individuals specifically approved by the Minister of Home Affairs.
