Over $226M in awards presented; Woman Deputy Superintendent named Best Cop

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Friday held its annual Christmas Awards Ceremony at the Officers Mess Annex, Eve Leary, distributing over $226 million in awards to ranks across the country.

The ceremony recognised officers’ dedication, professionalism, and exemplary service throughout 2025.

Hailing from Hosororo, Region One, Deputy Superintendent Fiona Fredericks, head of the Police Narcotics Branch, was honoured as the Force’s Best Cop for 2025.

Accepting her award, Fredericks said the moment is not hers alone but every officer who serves with courage, resilience and excellence. Admitting that leading a male-dominated unit has not always been easy, Fredericks praised her team for their support.

“I dedicate this award to my village, Hosororo, the little Amerindian community that shaped me and taught me resilience. This is indeed an extraordinary privilege at this time of my career.

“To my fellow officers, may this moment remind you that sacrifice does not go unnoticed. Commitment makes Guyana safer every day. Keep striving and proving that we are worthy. To every rank, just remember your sacrifice matters, your service matters. Continue to honour the badge, continue to rise,” she urged.

Assistant Superintendent Henry, attached to the Criminal Investigations Department, was named runner-up for Best Cop.

In addition, a Best Cop was named and awarded in every Policing division and branch, with recipients receiving both cash and prizes.

Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, also addressed the ranks and praised awardee for their dedication and urged them continued excellence.

“Excellence is not an occasional act, it is a habit, a culture, a commitment, demonstrated consistently over time. You have shown what the Guyana Police Force is capable of at its finest,” Walrond said.

With the Christmas season approaching, Walrond urged every Police officer to recommit to the oath they took.

“Guyana is changing rapidly, and policing must evolve with equal speed. Our force must remain adaptable, professional, fair, community-focused, and trusted,” she said.
