Six weeks to correct licence violations – President Ali warns drivers

President Dr Irfaan Ali on Tuesday issued a firm warning to drivers who obtained driver licences through irregular means will have six weeks to surrender themselves or face prosecution, licence suspension, and public exposure.

Speaking at the Guyana Police Force’s Traditional Christmas Breakfast, President Ali revealed that a new technology-driven “post-audit” system has exposed serious discrepancies in the licensing process.

He explained that the first major audit conducted with the Guyana Revenue Authority, the Home Affairs Ministry, the Minsitry of Public Service, Government Efficiency & Implementation focused on driver’s licences.

The findings, he said, require urgent attention.

“With technology, we can track the entire licensing chain, from theoretical exams to practical tests to licences issued at GRA.

“We have been able to triangulate the entire process and understand the discrepancies,” Dr Ali said.

Ali noted glaring anomalies, such as 150 people passing the theory exam, yet 450 receiving practical certificates.

“Something is clearly wrong,” he said. “We have all the names of individuals who got a practical certificate but never passed the theoretical exam.”

To this end, President Ali warned, “those persons found not to have followed the proper process will be given six weeks to surrender themselves and go through the correct procedure. After that, we will publish all their names, suspend their licences, and prosecute them.”

The Head of State emphasized that the move is part of a broader effort to eliminate corruption in government systems.

“That is the only way we can beat this corruption. We have to prosecute all parties involved,” he said.

The full findings of the post-audit, President Ali said will be made public soon.
