Speed cameras now monitor illegal third-lane driving

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in partnership with the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), has introduced a new enforcement capability under the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS) that automatically detects and flags illegal third-lane driving, a dangerous practice that has long contributed to congestion and public frustration across the country’s roadways.

Using upgraded SRIS video analytics, the system now identifies vehicles that misuse inside lanes to bypass traffic. The technology captures high-definition video evidence, including vehicle speed, lane position, and license plate information, which will be used as evidence by the GPF to pursue dangerous driving charges.

For years, members of the public have raised concerns about motorists abusing turning lanes to create an illegal “third lane,” especially during high-traffic periods. This behaviour not only causes collisions and near-misses but also significantly increases gridlock for law-abiding road users.

The new enforcement feature directly responds to these complaints by giving officers reliable, real-time evidence to act decisively and consistently.

The SRIS platform currently monitors more than 100 lanes of traffic, with additional locations scheduled for implementation in the coming months. By leveraging automated detection, the system enhances the GPF’s ability to enforce traffic laws without requiring officers to be physically present at every intersection.

“This upgrade is another step toward a safer, more disciplined traffic environment,” Traffic Chief Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh noted. “Technology allows us to enforce fairly and effectively, while reducing congestion and improving the daily commute for thousands of Guyanese.”
