Essequibo created history on Tuesday, winning a thrilling T20 final of the Guyana Cricket Board/Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Senior Women’s Inter-County competition, by defeating Berbice in a Super Over at the Lusignan Ground.

Both teams were dismissed for 62, forcing a Super Over to decide the winner. In the Super Over, Berbice made 5-1 and Essequibo responded with 6-1 to lift the title.

The result meant Essequibo made a clean sweep of the Women’s Inter-County, as just last week they also won the 50-over competition.

Earlier this year, the Essequibo male team also shared the Senior Inter-County 50-over title with Demerara after a tie at the Joe Jagmohan Ground in Hampton Court.

In that instance, fading light did not allow for a Super Over finish.

In the Women’s tournament, Essequibo was the only team to win all their games, defeating Demerara by five runs in the opening round, Berbice by 24 runs and Hinterland All-Stars by 78 runs.

Notably, this year’s tournament featured a new team in Hinterland All-Stars, after President Irfaan Ali had given the charge to the Guyana Cricket Board to have indigenous teams incorporated into the national cricket programme.
