The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) found several parcels of mercury in a vehicle intercepted near Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice on Sunday.

According to a CANU release, ranks intercepted the vehicle based on information received. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of several parcels of a highly toxic and strictly controlled substance, which was later confirmed to be mercury.

The suspect was arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters, along with the substance. Following a preliminary evaluation, the seized substance was determined to have an estimated street value of $18 million.

The substance was then handed over to the Ministry of Natural Resources for specialized processing and disposal, while the suspect is currently in Police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigations.
