Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of a deep-water harbour at Palmyra, Region Six, describing the project as a transformative step toward seamless transportation of goods and unprecedented economic growth.

According to the Minister, the establishment of a deep-water port at Palmyra is not merely an idea under discussion, but a concrete plan moving steadily toward implementation.

“It is at the Palmyra area that we are looking for the development of the deep-water harbour. It’s not a thought, it is a plan. It’s only a matter of time, and that will be determined very soon, who will be the builder, the operator, and the terms and conditions,” Edghill said.

The proposed harbour is expected to significantly enhance logistics and trade capacity by improving connectivity between inland production areas and international markets. Minister Edghill emphasised that a deep-water harbour at Palmyra would remove long-standing transportation challenges faced by exporters.

“With a deep-water harbour at Palmyra, it provides a connectivity that will be unprecedented, and economic opportunities that will be unprecedented,” he said.

He explained that producers often face difficulties moving large volumes of goods to shipping points but this port could efficiently transport and ship to global markets.

“They can have hundreds of containers waiting to be shipped, and the spot of getting those containers to water to the rest of the world is their greatest challenge.

“With connectivity to the deep-water harbour, hundreds of containers can come to Guyana to be shipped with ease,” the minister said.

The Palmyra harbour project is also closely linked to broader infrastructure development. According to Edghill, the Linden–Lethem corridor already has major groundwork being laid to support increased trade and transport.

“Along the Linden–Lethem trail, we’ve already built out the bridges, and the third and fourth phases of the road are under active consideration,” he said.

Beyond trade and transportation, the Minister pointed out that the harbour will stimulate economic activity along key routes and surrounding communities. The Palmyra deep-water harbour is poised to become a critical driver of national development, strengthening Guyana’s position as a regional logistics hub.
