See below the full tribute from President Dr Irfaan Ali:

It is with a profound and personal sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of Michael Khan, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. His death leaves a deep and quiet void in the heart of our society. Mike was one of the most capable and humanistic hospital administrators Guyana has ever known.

For nearly sixteen years, as the Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), he bore the immense weight of steering our principal referral hospital through an era of scarce resources. His tenure was marked by monumental progress: the physical expansion of wards, the historic introduction of kidney transplants and cardiac services, and the courageous institutional transition to autonomy. He professionalized the GPHC’s systems and, most critically, planted the seeds for Guyana’s own specialist training programmes.

He brought to his job as a healthcare professional, an extraordinary ethic of humane service to others. For Michael Khan, service was never impersonal. He saw the individual as the true recipient of care, and he went beyond obligation to assist people in real and practical ways. He was considerate, generous and helpful beyond reproach. His profound humanism was his greatest gift to our public healthcare system.

It is a bitter tragedy that the country he served with such dedication and distinction later inflicted a wound from which his spirit never recovered. The cruel and unjust termination of his service severed him from the institution that was his family, his life’s work, and his very soul.

Today, we mourn an exemplary public servant. His light is now extinguished but the pathways he laid continue to lead us toward a more caring and competent healthcare system.

On behalf of a grateful nation, I extend by heartfelt condolences to his daughters, relatives, and friends who are today mourning his death. May he rest in eternal splendour.
