President Irfaan Ali has set an ambitious tone for 2026, pledging continued economic growth, expanded public services and opportunities for all Guyanese as the nation moves confidently into a new chapter of its development.

In his New Year’s address, the President extended greetings to citizens at home, on the rivers and in the hinterland, those on duty guarding borders or caring for the sick and to Guyanese across the diaspora. He framed 2026 as a year not just of hope, but of action and tangible progress for communities across the country.

Reflecting on 2025, Ali highlighted the strides made in improving daily life: new schools and modern classrooms, increased access to clean water, strengthened household incomes, upgraded hospitals, safer streets, and broader opportunities for women, youth, pensioners, and persons with disabilities. Infrastructure developments, including the Demerara River Bridge, were cited as symbols of a nation more connected and committed to progress.

“The story of Guyana is no longer one of potential alone,” Ali said. “It is written in the language of progress made real, of opportunity seized, of a nation stepping confidently into its moments.”

Looking ahead, the President outlined plans for 2026 that focus on ensuring that economic growth translates directly into improved livelihoods. Key initiatives include:

    • A national digital backbone to make public services faster, simpler and more transparent.
    • Increased disposable incomes through higher wages, targeted support and reduced taxation.
    • Expanded housing development to provide secure, dignified homes.
    • Community enhancements such as better roads, lighting, playgrounds and sporting facilities.
    • Growth in manufacturing, tourism, and enterprise, with particular support for cultural and creative industries.
    • Expansion of healthcare and water treatment facilities, improved road safety, and strengthened discipline services through training, technology, and resources.
    • The introduction of a modern national e-ID system to streamline access to government services.

President Ali emphasised the role of youth in national development, urging them to bring energy, creativity, and ambition to the forefront of education, entrepreneurship, culture, sport, and public service. “You matter, you are needed, and you belong at the center of our national life,” he said, committing to support their growth as a cornerstone of Guyana’s future.

The President also made a personal pledge to govern with integrity, discipline, and compassion, prioritising national interest, careful stewardship of resources, and inclusive development. He stressed vigilance amid global uncertainty, reinforcing that the nation will remain prudent, prepared, and united.

“Let us enter this new year not with timid hope, but with strong conviction,” Ali said. “We are no longer waiting for opportunity. We are shaping it. Together, we will build not only wealth but comfort, not only success but legacy.”

He urged unity, optimism, and cooperation as guiding principles for the year, declaring, “2026 will be the year your plans take root and flourish. Onward, upward, together—for a brighter, stronger, and more prosperous Guyana.”
