Police probe death of Brazilian miner at Cuyuni River Backdam

Police in Regional Division #7 have launched an investigation into the death of 55-year-old Brazilian national and miner, Jose Cloves Deas Francisco, whose body was discovered on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Waiamo Backdam along the Cuyuni River.

Preliminary enquiries indicate that the man had been imbibing earlier and was last seen alive at about 07:00 hrs at his apartment. At around 10:00 hrs the same morning, he was found motionless on the steps of the apartment, prompting a report to the police.

Police said the body was examined at the scene and no marks of violence were observed. He was subsequently escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Investigations are ongoing.
