President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Saturday evening said the Government of Guyana continues to monitor the developments in Venezuela following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States of America.

“Stability, respect for law, and democratic transition are critical to the future of Venezuela and the broader Americas. In this regard, Guyana supports efforts that uphold democratic norms and ensure that the region remains a Zone of Peace,” he said in a social media post.

The President added that the Government of Guyana welcomes the leadership of the President of the United States in reaffirming shared commitments to freedom, democracy, and regional security.

“We look forward to constructive engagement in Venezuela’s next chapter in the interest of all Venezuelans,” he concluded.

Maduro and his wife were captured in Caracas, Venezuela on Saturday morning by the United States’ armed forces following months of planning. Reports indicate that Maduro was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges relating to conspiracy to import cocaine and possession of machine guns and destructive devices, along with narco-terrorism conspiracy. He is expected to appear before a federal court on Monday.
