Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh has issued a strong warning to motorists who improperly park along the roadways.

During an interview with the News Room on Friday, Singh stated that vehicles that are parked in a manner that exceeds the road shoulder and encroaches into the driving lane will be ticketed or charged for obstruction or dangerous parking. He emphasised that enforcement is already underway.

“We have already started. We have been doing some things,” Singh said.

The Traffic Chief explained that the Guyana Police Force is responsible for establishing offences and issuing charges or tickets where necessary. However, he acknowledged that other agencies are also involved in addressing the problem.

“There are other people involved in the equation where these vehicles are encumbering the roadway or. The Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) will play a role, but we would play the greater role,” he said.

Singh also questioned why vehicle owners would take the risk of parking improperly, reminding drivers that it is their responsibility to ensure their vehicles are parked correctly and safely on the roadways.

“I don’t know why owners would want to take the opportunity,” he added.

He reiterated the force’s commitment to ongoing enforcement, stressing that action against improper parking will continue in the interest of road safety and smooth traffic flow.

“If persons park in such a way that they exceed the road shoulder and it ventures into the drive lane, the obstruction or dangerous parking of that vehicle they will be ticketed or charged,” Singh said.
