President Dr Irfaan Ali said the government is seeking to replace all old ferries and other vessels as it simultaneously upgrades port facilities across the country.

The President spoke on Wednesday as he toured a new ferry from Greece that will ply the Georgetown to Region One route. This ferry was built in 2024 and can seat 284 individuals and 51 cars. The cost of the vessel was not provided during the President’s visit.

However, he disclosed intentions to expand the country’s maritime fleet.

“Incrementally, over the next three years, we will be looking at replacing all the older vessels so we can have the same level of service in all of the regions,” President Ali said.

According to him, the government is already reviewing vessels in the global marketplace so a newer one can be procured for the Georgetown to Region Seven route.

Weeks ago, the MV Konawaruk 1899 vessel was commissioned to support the high-demand Parika- Supenaam route.
