The Ministry of Housing on Friday conducted an outreach exercise in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), led by subject minister, Collin Croal, as part of ongoing efforts to address long-standing housing and infrastructure challenges in the region.

During the outreach, Minister Croal engaged residents and stakeholders through a series of activities focused on improving access to housing. As part of the outreach, a total of 85 certificates of title were handed over to residents of Onderneeming Phase Four.

“There are some historical issues here in Region Two some of which were caused by housing itself and because of that, we had to do some revalidation of some of your records or some of the receipts that you have and when that is done, then the process moves forward,” Croal explained.

Minister Croal also disclosed plans to commence the construction of both moderate-income and low-income housing in Region Two.

“We will therefore be building within a block within the Onderneeming Phase Four area some moderate income housing, so those will be some three bedroom houses and in the Hoff Van Aurich area, where the construction is ongoing now, we will be building some low income houses there also,” Croal revealed.

These houses, once completed, will help to reduce the backlog of housing applications in the region. Minister Croal further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to clearing all outstanding housing applications across all regions.

A commitment was also made to clear pending applicants specifically for the new Hoff Van Aurich Scheme. About 35 per cent infrastructural works have been completed with allottees to have access to their lands during this year.

A major concern highlighted during previous outreaches was persistent flooding, particularly in the Charity area, which has prevented several persons who were previously awarded house lots from occupying their land. To permanently address this issue, the minister announced that the installation of 180 cubic mobile pump at Charity.

“That pump is expected to arrive and be installed at Charity by the end of February,” Croal said.

This intervention is expected to significantly reduce flooding and improve drainage in the affected communities.

Additionally, the first phase of the construction of .7 km of drainage channel infrastructure is also underway. This will lead from the new scheme to discharge into the Pomeroon River and is expected to be completed in another three months.
