Preparatory work for verification of tint, noise nuisance meters ongoing

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has commenced preparatory works to ensure accuracy of the tint and noise nuisance meters used locally.

The Head of Legal Metrology at the GNBS, Shailendra Rai, on Wednesday said in keeping with the Bureau’s mandate, tint meters will be verified to ensure accurate readings as local authorities seek to enforce new tint regulations.

“We are making preparations to commence the verification of the tint meters that will be a new activity the Bureau would be rolling out [in 2026],” Rai said.

The Bureau’s mandate includes being responsible for the verification of weighing and measuring instruments used in trade, law enforcement and all the other sectors in Guyana. As such, the Bureau was tasked with ensuring the verification of the speeding meters for the automated speed ticketing system (SRIS Project).

Additionally, he said the body will also work along the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

 “We are going to be doing the verification of Sound Level Meters. The Guyana Police Force in collaboration with the EPA are moving to enforce the Noise Nuisance Act. Key for that process is the verification of the Sound Level Meters to ensure that they are working accurately,” Rai said.

Persons found guilty of creating noise nuisance can face hefty fines ranging from $300,000 to $750,000, along with possible arrest and seizure of equipment. The EPA and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have a Memorandum of Understanding to tackle noise nuisance cases more effectively. Under this partnership, police ranks are being trained in the use of sound level meters, which measure the intensity of noise at specific locations. The sound levels in residential areas are 75 decibels during the day and 60 decibels at night, based on the GNBS standards.
