Guyana officially surrendered their maiden senior regional T20 title on Wednesday, sinking to a third defeat in five matches to rule themselves out of contention for the January 23 final.

Needing a victory over a formidable Barbados side to keep their slim hopes alive, Guyana’s batting frailty was once again exposed as they were bundled out for a meagre 70 in pursuit of 93.

Left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz produced a masterclass in restrictive bowling, ripping through the Barbados middle order to finish with clinical figures of 4 for 13 from her four overs.

Aaliyah Alleyne proved to be the thorn in Guyana’s side with an unbeaten 38 off 36 balls that dragged her side to 92 for 8—a total that appeared sub-par at the interval but would later prove mountainous.

Barbadian Theanny Herbert-Mayers was the chief architect of destruction, as the spinner bagged 3 for 16

At one stage, Guyana looked in danger of failing to cross the 50-run mark, being 37-6, before Shabika Gajnabi launched a lone rescue mission.

Gajnabi’s unbeaten 41 was a gritty exhibition of defiance, but she lacked support from the other end.

Mandy Mangru (11) was the only other batter to reach double figures as Alleyne (2-11), Naijanni Cumberbatch (2-16) and Keila Elliott (2-21) applied the squeeze.

Guyana will play in placement matches on January 23 before turning its attention to the Super50.
