Housing Authority serious about clearing backlog – Pertab

The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) says it is rolling out a major plan to reduce the existing backlog of housing applications, which now stands at 75,000.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Martin Pertab made this disclosure on Thursday at the launch of the Hyde Park Steadfast Housing Project.

He said the next five years will see a strong focus on building more homes across the country.

“We are going to address the backlog,” Dr. Pertab said, noting that the agency is stepping up construction to meet the growing demand for housing.

The government aims to construct 40,000 new houses between 2025 and 2030; 8,000 new houses will be built while 15,000 house lots will be distributed in 2026.

Dr Pertab said the agency is also looking at expanding housing development along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, where several hundred acres of land have already been identified for new projects.

In addition, the CH&PA will be improving infrastructure, including drainage systems in both new and existing housing schemes.

Dr Pertab also said efforts will be made to reduce illegal settlements as the government works to provide more structured and affordable housing options.

“The CH&PA will continue to work with Guyanese to ensure they deliver affordable housing to all,” he said.
