Huge focus on garbage disposal as Manickchand vows to uplift communities 

Declaring “I will never fail, baby,” Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, said communities across the country will be uplifted through improved local government services and targeted investments from this year’s $1.558 trillion National Budget. 

Manickchand spoke about her ministry’s ambitious plans during the 2026 Budget Debate, which continued on Thursday. She said the work ahead is clear; it’s what people want— clean communities, predictable garbage collection, responsive health services, and accessible education. 

And she vowed: “We will deliver on our promises.” 

To achieve these ambitious goals, local government bodies will continue to receive increased subventions. Each of the 70 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) will get $30 million to execute their duties, while each of the 10 municipalities will get $50 million. 

Beyond that, Manickchand said the central government has planned targeted investments. New waste disposal ventures, she said, are among those targeted investments. 

Eight new landfill sites—in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Nine, and 10— will be developed. Not only that, but Manickchand said new landfill sites will include avenues for recycling waste. 

Altogether, Manickchand emphasised that the government is serious about making citizens much happier in their communities.
