Swampy land at Cummings Lodge has been transformed into a thriving housing scheme for hundreds of families, a development President Dr Irfaan Ali hailed.

The Guyanese Head of State visited the new housing scheme this week. During his interactive visit, he spoke about the sheer work that was required to materialise the vision for this 700-acre area.

At the new Cummings Lodge scheme, 769 house lots were allocated, and 458 houses were constructed. The area also has 16 acres of commercial land and 26 acres for a medical zone.

To make this a functional scheme, President Ali said 16 kilometres of roadways had to be constructed and another 6.2 km upgraded. Additionally, 6.2 km of pipelines were laid.

“It’s not only about the houses (and) transforming forests and swamp into this; it is putting in the 6.2 km of pipeline, the 6.2 km of road.

“The total expenditure to transform here from that forested swamp with the lights, water, and roads is in excess of $3 billion,” President Ali said, adding that nearly $20 million was spent on electricity services.

And he believes this is a worthwhile venture as hundreds of families will enjoy this scheme.
