Education Minister Sonia Parag has rejected claims that she breached confidentiality by releasing “sensitive information” on Opposition Member of Parliament Gordon Barker’s attendance at school during her recent Budget debate presentation. Barker is a teacher and represents the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party in the National Assembly.

The Minister referenced Barker’s attendance in her presentation, noting that he should “lead by example” after revealing his record of repeated lateness as a teacher.

The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) in a statement said the reference was “vile, disrespectful and politically motivated attack. Such actions undermine the dignity of the teaching profession and erode the principles of fairness and respect must guide our national discourse.” The Union called for an apology.

However, Minister Parag, in a statement, noted that there was “no breach of confidential or sensitive information occurred at any point during my contribution to the Parliamentary Budget Debate.”

She said as a sitting member of parliament, the public conduct and professional record of elected officials are subject to legitimate scrutiny within the National Assembly.

“Parliamentary debate, by its nature, involves accountability and transparency, particularly where public service delivery is concerned,” she said.

As such, the Minister said she categorically rejects any suggestion that any remarks were politically motivated or intended to undermine the dignity of the teaching profession. On the contrary, she added that the comments were made in the context of advocating for accountability, improved standards and the best possible outcomes for children.
