Gov’t advances plan to staff, operationalise Guyana Technical Training College with $78M budgeted
The Government of Guyana is advancing plans to establish the Guyana Technical Training College, with $78 million budgeted for the initiative in the 2026 budget, which is currently under consideration by the Committee of Supply of the National Assembly.
During Monday’s examination of allocations under the Office of the President, Opposition Member of Parliament Ganesh Mahipaul questioned the provision and sought updates on staffing and programme development.
Mahipaul asked whether eight additional instructors had been hired as part of the college’s development. Minister of Governance and Parliamentary Affairs Gail Teixeira, who defended the allocation, said the instructors have not yet been recruited but noted that interviews are currently ongoing.
She explained that once the instructors are hired, allowances will be made for their salaries.
The minister also addressed a $70 million allocation for consultancy services, stating that the funds will be used to develop diploma programmes for the technical training institution.
Additionally, Teixeira outlined that $5.5 million has been allocated for general operations at the college, while $2.5 million has been earmarked for the rental of a residence for visiting professors.
Construction of the Guyana Technical Training College (GTTC) at Port Mourant, Berbice, was completed in December 202,5 and the facility is ready to receive its first full cohort of students. That should have started in January 2026.
The campus includes a Facility Simulator, known as FacTor, along with practical workshops, lecture rooms, and administrative offices.
