Labourer arrested for assaulting traffic cop

Police on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old labourer of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice, after he was caught on camera assaulting a traffic rank.

The arrest follows a video circulating on social media which shows the traffic rank performing his duties and being assaulted. In the video, the suspect is seen approaching the rank with a glass bottle in his hand, assaulting the rank and subsequently hurling the bottle at him.

One unregistered Haojue motorcycle was also seized during the operation and lodged pending investigation.

The suspect will be charged with the offence of Assault on a Peace Officer, along with other related offences.

The Guyana Police Force strongly condemns any act of violence or obstruction against members of the Force while executing their lawful duties. The Force further reminded that assaulting a peace officer and interfering with police operations are serious offences and will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
