Man crushed to death by truck at Cornelia Ida

A 64-year-old man died after he was crushed by a truck on Tuesday along the Cornelia Ida Public Road, West Coast Demerara. Police reported that the man, Roy Chanka, was on an electric cycle when the accident occurred.

The driver of the truck, a 42-year-old man of Friendship, East Bank Demerara is in police custody assisting with the investigation.

The accident occurred at about 13:56hrs. Initial reports indicate that the truck  was proceeding west along the southern side of the road and was in the process of turning south into the Cornelia Ida Access Road when the left front wheel of collided with Chanka.

Chanka was picked up in an unconscious condition and transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The body was subsequently escorted to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

CCTV footage was viewed and obtained and forms part of the ongoing investigation. A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver of the truck detected no trace of alcohol.
