NA Psychiatric Hospital patient identified as 52-Y-O

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a patient of the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital.

According to a police statement, the man identified as 52-year-old Ravindra Yudeshwar Bishram, formerly of Cumberland, East Canje Berbice was discovered by staff at the hospital who went to investigate “gasping sounds” from the ward at about 19:50hrs on Thursday.

He was found in a pool of blood. Another patient, a 38-year-old male of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, was in the ward at the time.

Bishram was escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries on Friday, February 20, 2026, at about 06:53hrs while receiving medical treatment.

The body is presently at Persaud’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination, while the 38-year-old patient was placed in an isolation room as investigations continue.
