A construction worker was on Wednesday remanded to prison after being charged with the sexual assault of a pensioner.

Rohan Mohamed, also known as “Tuntay,” of Lot 474, Number One Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, appeared at the Fort Wellington Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy.

It is alleged that between March 27 and 28, 2026, Mohamed engaged in sexual penetration with a 66-year-old woman without her consent while she was at her home.

Mohamed, who was unrepresented, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

In court, he denied the allegation, claiming that he was not responsible and suggesting that his brother may have been involved.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards objected to bail, citing that Mohamed is a flight risk. The prosecutor told the court that the accused had previously been granted bail in another matter and fled the jurisdiction. He also raised concerns about the seriousness of the offence and the possibility of witness interference.

Magistrate Hardy upheld the prosecution’s objections and remanded Mohamed to prison.

The matter was adjourned to April 22, 2026.

According to reports, the woman had returned to Guyana from the United States in October 2025 and had hired Mohamed to conduct renovation works at her home.

On the night in question, the suspect allegedly gained entry to the house by removing window panes. The woman reported being threatened and assaulted during the incident.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police, and Mohamed was later arrested. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
