Fire Service EMTs responded to 7,000 emergency calls, delivered 12 babies

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded to more than 7,000 emergency calls to date.

“To date they would have responded to no less than 7,000 emergency calls aiding the sick and the injured, rescuing persons and then transporting them to the nearest hospital for further treatment,” Fire Chief (ag) Gregory Wickham disclosed on Wednesday.

According to Wickham, the figure reflects the growing demand for emergency medical services and the critical role EMTs play alongside firefighters.

In addition, Wickham disclosed that EMTs have also delivered at least 12 babies by the end of 2025.

“Our EMTs continue to strive and to impact our society in positive ways,” he said.

Wickham emphasised that the numbers highlight both the workload and the reach of the EMT unit.

“Touching over 7,000 lives is no easy job, but our EMTs do so with joy and pride,” he added.

He also pointed to ongoing efforts to strengthen the unit’s capacity to meet increasing demands.

“They continue to strive for development, building capacity and ensuring they remain fit for purpose so that the nation can enjoy the humanitarian services they offer to citizens,” Wickham said.
