Stricter enforcement coming as motorcyclist fatalities climb

Motorcycle accidents remain a major road safety concern, with authorities moving toward stricter enforcement to address widespread violations and reduce fatalities.

Inspector Lindon Williams, attached to the Traffic Department at the Kitty Police Station, highlighted the issue during a recent episode of ‘Road Safety and You’, pointing to alarming behaviour among riders.

“Motorcyclists are riding motorcycles with no helmet, no clothes on, they don’t have licenses and so on,” Williams said.

He noted that such practices continue to put lives at risk, with motorcyclists frequently involved in serious accidents.

As of March 2, 28 persons died in road accidents, with 12 of those victims being motorcyclists.

Williams explained that unlicensed riders present an added challenge for enforcement.

“So if you are not the holder of a driver license, there is no demerit point to be taken away from your license and that also is a challenge,” he said.

In response, Williams said authorities are looking to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, as Police continue to receive daily reports of traffic violations.

“Every day we receive reports of different offences that persons are committing on the roadway and the police can only do so much,” Williams said.

However, he noted that new measures, including the use of technology, are expected to support stricter enforcement.

“Now with the new intervention of technology with the cameras and speeding system, which also assist the police in detection of these offence… we have persons monitoring you according to your vehicle number on a daily basis,” Williams explained.

He added that members of the public also have a role to play in improving road safety.

“We also have different platforms where persons can report persons for committing these offences and we will deal with them,” he said.
